The Most (and Least) Pet Friendly National Parks
Acadia National Park Policy Pets must be obeyed at all times and all trash must be cleaned up and disposed of properly. Pets are welcome on 100 miles of trails and 45 miles of highways in the park. Blackwoods, Seawall, and Schoodic Woods campgrounds are pet-friendly. At Isle au Haut, pets are only allowed on day trips. Pets are not allowed in public buildings, at guided events, at Duck Harbor Campground, Wild Gardens of Acadia, and Sand Beach (June 15-September 8) and Echo Lake. Ocean Drive (May 15 – September 15) Some trails are closed to animals due to inclement weather. Most forest lakes provide drinking water to the public. Animals and people cannot swim in them. Dogs are eligible to become BARK Rangers in Acadia National Park. This program teaches dog owners the importance of following the B.A.R.K. Rules. during a visit to Acadia.
Dogs who complete this brief program can be inducted as Bark Rangers. And owners can purchase a special Bark Ranger pin as a souvenir of their visit. Plaques are available at the East Country Bookstore at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center.

Amazing Dog Friendly National Parks
Driving the Park Loop Trail is a great way to orient yourself when arriving in Acadia. Although it’s only 27 miles, plan to spend two to three hours with stops to admire the scenery and perhaps a short hike to some views.
This is where you’ll find some of the best views of the coast and cliffs, so allow plenty of time to take it all in.
Jordan River Restaurant is located on the west side of Park Loop Road, overlooking Jordan Lake in Seal Harbor. Dogs are welcome to join you on the patio or at the picnic table on the lawn for lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. The food here is famous for its baked popovers, homemade ice cream, and fresh Maine seafood!
If you bought an ice cream (and I recommend you do!), the route around Lake Jordan gives you the opportunity to burn off some of those calories.
Escape Acadia’s Crowds On Hot Days With This Great Loop Hike
The road goes around the entire lake. The west side is rockier and the east side is quieter. But the good news is that both sides offer stunning views, with the North Bubble and the South Bubble in the background.
Forty-five miles of highways, built between 1913 and 1940, run through the heart of Acadia. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. He paid for and maintained its construction so that he and others could enjoy the park on private roads without cars. Originally intended to accommodate horses and carriages, these trails are now popular with walkers and cyclists.
The park office will provide a route map, which shows signs for 17 stone bridges. Each bridge has a unique design and crosses rivers, streams, roads and mountains.
We chose the six mile trail near Eagle Lake. It’s the perfect way to experience the tranquility of the park with Buster and Ty.
Best Hikes In Acadia National Park
Are you looking forward to seeing the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain? At more than 1,500 feet above sea level, it overlooks the island-studded coastline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. But to be there at sunset you need to plan ahead!
From late May to late October, a vehicle must be parked to reach the top of Cadillac Mountain. Sunset permits are available at 10am. ET two days before the date of your visit and sell out quickly. Daily reservations are available three months in advance and are easy to find.
Please note that vehicle reservations for the Summit Cadillac Trail are in addition to park admission. Fortunately, you can purchase both before you leave home at Recreation.gov.
