Best Dog Friendly Road Trips

Best Dog Friendly Road Trips – There’s no more distraction than getting ready for a wild road trip! This year my husband and I took our two Australian Shepherds – Leo and Oakley – on a trip to the National Park, including a trip to admire the fall foliage in Telluride. From San Diego we spent 12 days visiting the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Monument Valley, Telluride and Mountain Village, Mesa Verde, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon and finally Valley State Park.

Even I have to admit, it was pretty good for our first trip. And it was our first trip with our puppies! But we have collected a lot of memories and I hope our experience will inspire you. Here are some helpful tips we found while preparing for a great trip with your pets!

The first decision we made was when to stay away. For us, traveling in less than 14 days seemed perfect. We’ve found in the past that no matter how much fun the trip is, we’re ready to go home after two weeks.

Being on the road requires more effort, planning and energy than days “at home”. Also, since this was our first long trip with the dog, I didn’t want to feel tired by the end.

Another factor in our plan is our desire to spend at least five days in Telluride. Our whole goal of the trip was to enjoy the leaves as much as possible. After all, the whole idea of the trip was to enjoy the gold leaf!

We stayed in Telluride and Village Village for 4 days and 5 nights, took day trips to Durango, Colorado and Mesa Verde National Park. If I were to do it over again, I would spend the night in Cortez, Colorado to check out Mesa Verde.

We also knew we didn’t want to ride too much in one day. Not because I like traveling to learn more about traveling, but because we had to count on Leo and Oakley. Sitting in a car is as boring to people as it is to dogs. The trip from San Diego to Telluride takes 14-15 hours non-stop. The most useful app I’ve used is Roadtrippers.

When you enter the starting point of your trip, Roadtripper provides directions and points of interest within 30 miles of your destination. Since the Grand Canyon is one of the dog parks, I clicked “Add to Trip” and the Grand Canyon was automatically added as a stop. After adding our stops, Roadtripper changed the default route and the plan started to come together.

I gradually added Horseshoe Bend and Monument Valley as additional places to see along the way. I wanted to add Antelope Canyon and Havasu, but I found out that these are two places where dogs are not allowed. We wanted to make it to Telluride Beach in three days. With a maximum of six hours of driving each day, I immediately wrote Kingman, Arizona as if we were going to stop for the night.

For a 12-day trip with two dogs, we rented a large SUV to make the trip as comfortable as possible. Although the Nissan Armada we chose didn’t have the best MPG, it was perfect for us and the kids.

I purposely planned to ride as much as possible on the first day because everyone has a lot of energy at the beginning! This may also be something you want to keep in mind while traveling.

Of course, everyone needs a bathroom break. However, with the lockdown, finding the bathroom proved more difficult than expected! We quickly learned to use the bathroom whenever it was available, whether we needed it or not! It’s advice we’ll keep in mind as we prepare for our next trip.
