Best Dog Friendly National Parks – There are 4 national parks in Colorado and three of them have dog-friendly locations! Unfortunately, the state’s most popular national park (Rocky Mountain National Park) does not allow dogs on any trails. But three lesser-known parks: Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison are definitely worth a visit with your dog! All three parks are located in southern Colorado and can be combined into one great road trip (the Ultimate Dog-Friendly Colorado Road Trip post is in the works). If you plan to visit multiple parks that year, consider purchasing an annual national park pass! Annual passes cost $80, but individual park admission costs $25 or $30 per person.
The Great Sand Dunes are about a four-hour drive south of Denver. Although it requires a lot of driving, it is possible to make a day trip – Alice and I did just that! Dogs are allowed on the first set of sand dunes and some trails When we went to this giant hole, I was surprised, behind them were 14 giants The weather can definitely make or break your time in this park We are there stayed in the first week of April, sunny, not too windy, not too hot and it was perfect! Very cold with snow in the winter, but very hot in the summer Some trails in the park are closed in the winter (and often in the spring), so you won’t be able to access the high altitude trails. If the wind is too strong, the sand can get into the child’s eyes If it is too hot, the sand can burn the feet We have seen other dogs with boots and glasses to deal with it! The weather in Colorado is unpredictable, but my goal is to go in April, May or October, or to get there at sunset before the heat sets in. Be sure to stop to hike to Zapata Falls along the way – you’ll see a sign between the highway and the park entrance. Bring waterproof shoes or at least a change of socks

Controversial opinions… I prefer the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to the Grand Canyon! When I was there in July, the park wasn’t very crowded and the view of the canyon walls was incredible. The marble design on the stone is amazing and the stone layers made by Canon are really beautiful Dogs are allowed very much on the edge, although it is not clear on the map The smooth path is definitely dog friendly Other scenic spots along the shortest route , such as Painted Wall, Sunset Point, and Chass View, have small signs indicating that dogs are allowed. Watching the sunrise from the sunset spot is downright beautiful! The weather here can be a problem: the main road is closed in winter, but in summer it gets very hot during the day
If you’re looking for a closer location, the Holiday Inn Express in Montrose is about 20 minutes from the park entrance and everyone here is super friendly. I also recommend stopping by the Museum of the West while you’re in the area. It’s basically a mini old west town full of fake stuff and dogs are allowed! With more than 100 miles of trails to pamper, driving routes to explore, and free pet-friendly shuttles, visiting Acadia National Park with dogs is a real people-pleaser. The whole family!

The Jordan Pond House restaurant is located on the west side of Park Loop Road near Jordan Pond in Seal Harbor. If you have an ice cream popover (and I recommend you do!), the trail around Jordan Pond offers a chance to burn calories.
