Dog Friendly Vacations In New England – We call this trip “Lincoln’s List” because this trip is made with our best friend in mind.

Our dog, Lincoln, has been with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we love to travel. Simply put, jumping in the car is the most economical way for us to travel with it (and we take the Lincoln almost everywhere we go).

Lincoln goes to New England on this trip because it’s summer and the summer heat is high, the outdoors are great, and you’ll find one of the friendliest national parks in the United States.

In the summer, take advantage of the longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you’ll find in many other countries at this time of year. Or a trip in the fall to take advantage of the amazing fall foliage at one of the best foliage viewing spots in the world.

We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England on our 2022 trip. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long weekend camp on Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY in between towards the end. . August, one month in Campton, NH in September, three weeks in Ellsworth, ME in early October and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)

There’s never been a bad time to be in New England during these months. Sure, the summer months can get hot at night, but make sure your rental has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (If we’re being honest, we’re saying this as people who are used to living in Texas, so our heat tolerance is much higher than those who live up north year-round. We do nothing but air conditioning, though, so our tolerance is probably small, huh!)

However, we will say that if you want to plan your trip around beautiful autumn leaves, try to go in the second week of October. While the areas known for foliage will be busy (ie Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the views will be a bonus!

RTL Tip: Need more time to walk or spend time on the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Fancy a nice autumn walk through the leaves with a hot cider in hand? Visit in October. Do you want lower temperatures but fewer people? Visit in September.

Lincoln is definitely a fan of the journey we take because that means it’s very easy for him to be with us. If you’re close enough to any of these places to drive, we recommend it. Drive to the next stop on this trip and make a full loop home.

However, if you can’t get here by car, and you have a dog that does well on a plane, you can fly into Boston Airport and rent a car as soon as you land. If you are flying, we recommend changing the itinerary a bit and driving from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

Note: If you live too far to drive anywhere on this trip, and there’s no way your pup is traveling on the plane (not Lincoln, unless you’re flying in the seat next to us, ha!) in the comments below where you live and we will ask Lincoln to collect another list near your starting point.

We recommend treating this trip like a regular road trip, staying at a different location for each stop on your trip. You can search for campsites near each location or stay overnight in nearby towns.

In Lincoln, NH, consider the Pemi River or Lost River Valley Campgrounds or the city of Lincoln. (Can’t find anything in Lincoln? Check out Campton, NH, just 20 miles south. We spent a great month in one of the Red Sleigh cabins in Campton.)

In Lake Placid, consider Rollins Pond Campground, Ausable Chasm Campground, or Lake Placid Village. (Want a spectacular view? Check out Lake Placid Village lodging, available

Mirror Lake. Mirror Lake Inn has dog-friendly rooms and a restaurant with a dog-friendly patio. Can’t find anything in Lake Placid? Try nearby Wilmington.)

In Stowe, consider Smugglers’ Notch State Park Campground or downtown Stowe. (You can also check it out about 40 minutes away in Burlington. The town of Burlington is incredibly charming!)

In Acadia National Park, consider Blackwoods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you end up in Ellsworth, check out the Blue Hill Mountain Hike at sunset. It’s amazing, dog-friendly, and beats the views in Acadia with 1/100 the crowds! )

Lincoln (the city, not to be confused with our dog, of the same name) is located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This is what makes dog walking a great place to start.

You could easily spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire on your own because there are TONS of great hiking trails and things to do nearby! (We spent a month here and couldn’t do and see everything on our list!)

But since we’ve only planned one day for you to enjoy in the White Mountains on this trip, here are our top tips for the best things to do.

This is a bonus because you can actually drive the Kancamagus Highway on your way from Portland to Lincoln. (So every time you drive down the road, come back to this part. If you’re not making the full circle on this trip, consider setting aside about two hours there and back on the Kancamagus Highway while you’re in Lincoln .)

Kancamagus Highway is 34 miles between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. It is one of New Hampshire’s most popular spots and one of the best places in the United States to view fall foliage. While there are MANY viewpoints and trails on this beautiful trail that can keep you busy throughout the trip, we recommend stopping at a few spots and avoiding this trail. (We have better next time!) Note: Visiting this fall? Wake up early. This ride fills up quickly, so you can board the night before or wake up early to avoid long lines and crowds on the way to the next stop. Kancamagus Highway is great, but it’s not just your day job!

Let’s get you and your pup out of the car and into the woods! Hiking was the main activity that kept us busy during our month in New Hampshire. We looked every weekend and most evenings during the week. Spending time on the road is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.

You can see all of our favorite places in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendations, we suggest you head to Welch-Dickey Mountain. This 4.4 mile loop is a great half day hike with sweeping views of the mountains. It’s great for exercise and it’s a lot of fun if you’re in a different area between exposed cliffs and forest paths.

And Welch and Dickey Mountain. We recommend going counter-clockwise to climb the steepest part. (Especially if it’s wet or visiting in the fall when the leaves are down, this is helpful. Take your time; the ground can be slippery.)
