Our son, Lincoln, has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we fell in love with travel. Simply put, jumping in the car is the most affordable way to travel with him (and we take Lincoln everywhere we go).

Lincoln takes you to New England on this trip because summer and fall temperatures are great, outdoor activities abound, and you’ll find one of the most dog-friendly national parks in the United States.

This trip is similar to our Badass Good: 10-Day NE Road Trip trip, but only with great stops and ideas for taking your pup!
During the summer, take advantage of longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you’ll find in many other countries at this time of year. Or travel in autumn to take advantage of the stunning fall foliage at one of the world’s best leaf viewing spots.
We spent five months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long week camping on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY in the middle of last. August. August, a month in Campton, NH in September, three weeks in Ellsworth, ME in early October, and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
It’s not a bad time to be in New England this month. Sure, the summer months can be warm at night, but just make sure your rental home has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we say this as people who live in Texas, so our tolerance for heat is probably higher than those who live up there all year round. However, we don’t do anything without air conditioning, so in that sense, our tolerance is probably lower, ha!)

However, we will say that if you want to plan a trip for the beautiful fall foliage, aim to travel in the second week of October. Although places known for foliage will be busy (like Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the views will be worth it!
RTL Tip: Need more time walking or on the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Want a cozy autumn walk with a warm cider in hand? Visit in October. Want cooler temperatures but fewer crowds? Visit in September.
Lincoln no doubt loves the road trips we take because it makes it easier for him to join us. If you are close enough to any place on this trip to drive, that’s what we recommend. Drive to the nearest destination for this trip and make a full loop back home.
However, if you can’t drive and have a dog that does well on the plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up a rental car when you land. If you are flying, we recommend that you reschedule this trip a bit and drive from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

Note: If you live too far to drive anywhere on this trip, and there’s no way your pup is going on the plane (or Lincoln, unless he’s flying alone in the seat next to us, ha!) . in the comments below where you live and we will ask Lincoln to get another list closer to your original location.
We recommend treating this trip like a traditional cruise, where you will have a different stay at each stop on your journey. You can check out campsites near each location or stay in nearby towns.

For Stowe, consider Smugglers’ Notch State Park Campground or downtown Stowe. (You can also check it out 40 minutes from Burlington. Downtown Burlington is amazing!)
For Acadia National Park, consider Blackwoods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you end up in Ellsworth, check out the Blue Hill Sunset Hike. It’s amazing, dog-friendly, and rivals the views of Acadia with 1/100 the crowds!)
Lincoln (the city, not to be confused with our dog, has the same name) is like being in the middle of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. That’s what makes it a great place to start dog walking.

You could easily spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire on your own, as there are TONS of great fun and things to do nearby! (We spent a month here and couldn’t do and see everything on our list!)
But since we’re only planning one day to enjoy the White Mountains on this trip, here are our top tips for the best things to do.
This is a bonus because you can drive the Cancamagus Highway from Portland to Lincoln. (So every time you’re driving on your way, come back to this section. If you’re not sure how to fix this route, consider setting aside two hours to drive there and back along the Cancamagus Highway on your own time. in Lincoln.)

A Dog Friendly Road Trip To Scotland Via The Yorkshire Dales
Kancamagus Highway is a 34 mile stretch between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. It is one of New Hampshire’s most popular drives and one of the best places in the United States to see fall foliage. While there are MANY viewpoints and trails along this scenic drive that can keep you busy the entire trip, we recommend that you stop at a few lookouts and none of the lifts along the way. (We’ve got a better one coming!) Note: Visiting in the fall? Get up early. This ride fills up quickly, so board the night before or get up early to avoid long lines and heavy traffic en route to your next destination. The Cancamagus Highway is great, but not your only adventure of the day!
Let’s get you and your pup out of the car and into the woods! Hiking kept us very busy during our month in New Hampshire. We went exploring every weekend and most weekends. Spending time on the trail is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can see all of our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendation, we recommend going to Welch-Dickey Mountain. This roughly 4.4 mile loop is a great half-day hike with mountain views. Dog-friendly, good exercise and lots of fun when you climb to different places between open rock and wood paths.
If you’re looking for this entire trail, look for the Welch-Dickey Loop (not “Welch Mountain Rock Ledge” or “Welch and Dickey Mountains”). If you follow the full loop trail, you will see the edge of the cliff

And Welch and Dickey Mountain. We recommend going uphill in a clockwise direction to get uphill during peak times. (This is helpful, especially if it’s wet or you’re visiting during fall foliage season when the leaves are down. Take your time, the ground can be slippery.)
Dog-friendly? Absolutely. Everything on this street is Lincoln (dog) approved! Just be aware that there are steep spots for this hike on exposed rock.
