) water. People ask if I fertilize my plants, and no, I just use plant foods that accomplish the same goal. Fertilizers are often chemical compounds that enhance plant growth and productivity. Plant foods contain the macro and micronutrients your home needs.

When I water my plants, I leave them all in our house. I have a drip tray under each plant (there is a grill under the tray) and the pots have drainage holes. Watering plants can be a learning process, I watered until I saw a trickle of water coming and then stopped watering. If some water escapes the plate, it will eventually be reabsorbed or vaporized.
As long as you have proper drainage, don’t over water your plants. Plants can be damaged if they sit in water, so make sure your plants have drainage holes and that their roots don’t sit in water.
There are always exceptions to the rule. I have some plants that don’t have drainage holes and they do just fine, but they are the only plants that can tolerate it. For example, I have a philodendron, a Greek plant that has no drainage holes and is effective, but the plant is easy to care for. Do your research and study each plant as you bring it home.

Plants need sun to grow and develop, that seems obvious, but that doesn’t mean all plants will die immediately without sun. I have some plants in low light areas such as snake plants and onion plants that don’t look good. Most of our plants are near windows or they get indirect sunlight.
Two of my daughters have several pothos plants in their bookcases, which are good examples of indirect sunlight and do best in low to moderate light. I’ve seen pothos leaves turn yellow after accidentally placing them in front of a window that burns the leaves. I can put any other plant in front of the window and they will thrive.
I got a growing bulb for Christmas a few years ago that I wanted to put on our Christmas tree. I replaced the ceiling light with grow bulbs and it kept my leafy figs alive for two months! I put that umbrella plant in my study in the shade of a ceiling-mounted floodlight in a windowless space in our basement.
The plant needs light to see the sun, for some it’s around 6-10 hours. I installed a grow lamp in a floor lamp above these snake plants. The bulb gives off a nice warm light and creates a cozy space.

I once used coconut oil to coat the leaves of my plants because I saw someone do it and they looked great, but in the end it was a bad idea. Rubbing coconut oil on the leaves burned the leaves near the window, causing the leaves to stick!

If you’re looking at how to prepare plants for the holidays, most of the information focuses on preserving them for the summer. Many plants grow slowly or go dormant during the slower, darker months, changing their feeding needs. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to prepare before winter break. Here are a few dos and don’ts for preparing your plants before cold weather hits.
Most houseplants are native to tropical environments, with temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees. In nature, they may not be exposed to the blinding cold of a sharp window or the perpetually hot wind. Any of these conditions can lead to heat stroke in neglected plants. Taking a little time to proactively move your plants before your trip can save you a lot of pain later.
How To Keep Houseplants Watered While On Vacation
As we mentioned earlier, most houseplants are adapted to tropical environments, which are around most people’s comfortable temperatures when indoors. However, sometimes we forget to heat things up for them when we are not at home. To save energy, you can move all the plants to one room and heat only that room. Grouping plants together in a house can also help maintain humidity levels, especially when paired with a stone tray or two.
When your plants are ready to drink right out of the door, be sure to water them well. Depending on the length of your trip and the type of plants you keep, this may be all you need. Because your plant gets less light, it uses less water, which means you can go longer between waterings. If you check your soil chart regularly, you’ll have a better idea of how long your plants can go between watering intervals.
