City breaks aren’t usually my thing (I want a small town break!), but my two kids love city trips. While this has led to some vacation planning conflicts over the years, I appreciate the cultural sites, great restaurants, and beautiful architecture that major cities on the East Coast have to offer.
East Coast Family Vacation Ideas
Since we live in Vermont, we can take day trips to many major cities. Here are our favorite towns and cities for a fun (and not too busy) East Coast family vacation.
I know I would be remiss if I didn’t include New York and Boston, two of my favorite cities. As much as I love them, I think the cities on this list are great choices for kids.
It’s hard to hold a candle to Washington D.C. when it comes to affordability and kid appeal. Home to the world’s largest museum complex (recently fully opened to visitors), DC is a walking city with many cultural attractions for families. for a week or longer.
Most of Washington’s monuments are located in a park-like area or near the Washington Mall. Families can climb atop the Washington Monument, pay their respects at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and meet America’s most famous presidents at a variety of commemorations.

What do kids love about Washington D.C.? Stock up at the International Spy Museum, watch the assassination exhibit at the Lincoln Ford Theatre, and visit the pandas at the Smithsonian National Zoo.
Where to Stay: Save yourself the headache by staying near the National Mall. I promise it’s worth the extra cost. With basic amenities and clean rooms, State Plaza Hotel is located near all major attractions and is very affordable.
Getting there: If you don’t mind hitting the pavement, you can walk most of your journey. DC subway system. It’s a cheap option for visiting the zoo or traveling out of town.
Recommended tour: The Hop-On Hop-Off Tram Tour allows you to explore the monuments and museums at your own pace. It has 15 pages and you can buy one or two day tickets.
Best Beaches On The East Coast
Philadelphia is another great East Coast city that proves urban family vacations are attainable. With tons of free attractions and activities, great family-friendly museums, and some of the best restaurants we’ve ever tried, Philadelphia is a must-see destination for every family.
History buffs will enjoy visiting the Liberty Bell (free, but expect long lines), Independence Hall, where the Constitution and Declaration of Independence were signed, and exploring the Old Town and its streets filled with stonework and 18th-century charm.
What do kids love about Philadelphia? Little ones will love the exhibits at the Please Touch Museum in historic Memorial Hall, and older kids will enjoy the hands-on science exhibits at the Franklin Institute, one of the East Coast’s most popular science museums.
Where to Stay: Philadelphia consists of several small neighborhoods, each with its own character and vibe. We haven’t tried them all yet, but we love Fishtown for the walks and great restaurants. This beautiful and affordable apartment can sleep five people with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. There is even an outdoor terrace with a barbecue.

Getting there: Philadelphia is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the country, and the diverse landscapes and great outdoors make it fun to explore on foot. You can purchase a day pass for the commuter rail/subway SEPTA and visit many of the city’s attractions.
Recommended Tour: For kids ages 12 and up, this Segway tour is a fun way to explore some of Philadelphia’s most well-known landmarks. This is a small group tour lasting approximately two hours.
Atlanta is one of the best family vacations on the East Coast, with kid-friendly attractions for toddlers and young adults alike. This vibrant city is home to the world’s largest aquarium, the College Football Hall of Fame, and the famous Coca-Cola factory. But there is so much more!
Atlanta is an eclectic city, and if you love the outdoors, there are many parks with playgrounds and hiking trails. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is located in Piedmont Park and features 30 acres of beautiful exhibits year-round.

No trip to Atlanta would be complete without a visit to Martin Luther King Jr. Friendly National Historical Park. Families can see the park where King was born, the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he preached, and pay their respects at his grave.
