South America – Summer is travel season for us – and that includes our trusty Berneddal, Dil As Midwesterners looking for some big city action, we pointed the car to Nashville, Tennessee, home of live music, great shopping and hot fried chicken. We stayed at The Dive Motel, a retro dog-friendly place with great drinks, an on-site food truck and poolside disco parties. Our dog is perfectly content while we do some laps, a sleep button on the in-room entertainment switch, a music board that offers a playlist based on your mood. He thought the disco ball was cool too!

From Nashville we drove through beautiful Tennessee to Chattanooga, where we stumbled upon the best gem of our trip: Rock City Gardens. Perched atop Lookout Mountain, dotted with cottages, the entire nature experience is straight out of a fairytale. Literally: These trails have names like Peter Pan’s Trail and Little Red Riding Hood’s Trail. Rock City itself is exactly what it sounds like: a meandering path over rock cliffs and rock bridges with rock formations, waterfalls, suspension bridges and remarkable views. Weekend admission is $30 and worth every penny for an amazing opportunity for dogs that we will remember forever.
After we stretched our legs, Georgia was somehow transported to the city of Atlanta There are many options for shade patios in the city Enjoy roasted green tomatoes with pimento cheese and ice cold Arnold Palmers under the sun in our bellies. Bellies full, we headed to Piedmont Park, 185 hectares of green space bursting with skyline views and shady spots. Along the edge of the park is the Beltline, my favorite thing in ATL The 33-mile trail, lined with colorful walls, connects parts of the city with a street-friendly street that has more courtyards along the way. After a long walk, we took a break at Ponce City Market to get some food and enjoy the many seating areas. We ended the day at Big Softie in Summer Hill, with waffle cones piled high, sweet vanilla bean soft serve (is there a more nostalgic summer treat?) and creative toppings like candied corn flakes. Too fancy for babies? We think not!
Next up on the trip was Charleston, South Carolina If walking your dog is your favorite activity, I can’t think of a better place to do it than the cobbled streets of this beautiful city. Our dog hotel at this stop is the beautiful Emmeline, which feels like a perfect extension of urban color but muted tones. Our collection suite has plenty of room to spread out, a welcome treat after 1300 miles on our car – complete with green velvet couches, mid-century modern dining tables and an old-school player and vinyl records. And the spacious weather was a breath of fresh air after our dog’s first excursion to the Palm Beach Islands (be sure to research when and where dogs are allowed).
Visiting and visiting the gardens of the Batiri’s historic buildings took up most of our trip, but of course we still fit in some fresh seafood. The view from our hotel room of the bright lights on the terrace of Franny and The Fox Hotel woke us up to a wonderful happy hour.

For the final leg of our journey, we head northwest to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the most dog-friendly city in America: Asheville, North Carolina. It maintains its reputation and requires the least research of all In short, dogs are allowed to walk almost anywhere in this city We enjoyed beer tasting with pickle pairings on the patio at Forest Boys Brewing and dinner at Catbaba Brewing, where the pizzeria serves up hot pies made just down the street. The riverside tacos at White Dock are another specialty, followed by more frozen drinks (ether, frozen cherry colored with bourbon, definitely a classic Southern treat that I love right now). About an hour outside of town, a trip to Crabtree Falls gave our dog a chance to splash in the cool water, and we had a chance to enjoy the spectacular scenery along the Blue Ridge Scenic Byway.
There’s no way to burst the vacation bubble like spending 13 hours a day with your dog, so we decided to stay at Cowboy’s Nashville, the ultimate dog-free experience. The people at this boutique hotel are true dog lovers: our dog got to hang out at the bar, roam the living room, and even went out with us for the evening to live jazz in the lounge. With their dogs and Roberta’s Pizza Pop, our dog ends the trip with everyone’s favorite treat: pizza crust, aka “pizza bones.” There’s nothing like a hot bubble bath with a hot sandwich to set you up for the long drive home. All in all, a perfect place to recharge before completing 2400 miles on the road
