Having the largest animal shelter in the United States right in your backyard makes Kanab a very pet friendly town! There are places in Kanab where pets are not welcome. Located on the north side of downtown Kanab, the Roadhouse is the best pet friendly hotel we’ve seen. Living there helps support the life-saving Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, five miles down the road.
In a world where some “pet-friendly” hotels don’t tolerate pets, we’d give Best Friends Roadhouse a 16 out of 10 on the pet-friendliness scale. They offer a completely unique experience – the possibility of accommodation in a pet-friendly hotel!
Our room was lovely, with a small kitchen equipped to prepare and serve simple meals and a dining area for sharing. The bed was also incredibly comfortable and the bathroom was beautiful.
But many hotels have nice rooms and comfortable beds. Best Friends Roadhouse really stands out in the way they treat pets – starting with their pet policy. No pet fee, no weight limit, no breed limit, cats are welcome and up to four pets are allowed per room.

After a long day in the car, Miles and I were tickled that Roadhouse had two dog parks! He ran around and used up some energy. Rod and I were ready for a long evening walk.
The hotel provided dog bowls for Miles in our room, but he much preferred to sip from the dog fountain outside.
He was less excited to see the pet spa and guest laundry. Fortunately, we didn’t have any incidents where Miles needed a bath. But it can be very suitable for anyone whose dog is looking for a little pampering.

Another treat we discovered (besides the human cookies and dog treats we got at check-in) was that Miles had a choice of two dog beds. Ours does not include!
In addition to a great breakfast, the vendors are full of all kinds of goodies. They even have pet gear in case you forgot to pack something.
What about people who love animals but don’t travel with their pet? The folks at Best Friends Roadhouse have it covered too! They will arrange for a dog, cat or rabbit from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to sleep with you. It’s a whole new level of accessibility for pets!!
As I mentioned, Kanab is very pet friendly and we had no problem finding an outdoor restaurant for miles. From simple takeout to vegan taco trucks to fine dining, staying hungry is never a problem.

Located on 6,000 acres five miles north of downtown Kanab, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is much more than its name suggests. Founded in 1984, Best Friends has led a national movement to stop the killing of homeless dogs and cats from foster homes.
The shelter accepts 1,600 dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, horses, pigs and other animals daily. We invite you to take a free guided tour and volunteer to spend time with the animals or enjoy the trails and unusual environment with your pet.
The sanctuary is open seven days a week, but tour and volunteer opportunities fill up quickly, so be sure to sign up early! During our visit we toured the Grand Sanctuary with Miles in our car after the tour bus and listened to the guide on our radio. Then Miles and I went to check on the pigs and goats and kept him out of the paddock.

Our next stop was a wonderful, vegetarian lunch at the Angel Village Cafe. The view from their deck overlooking Angel Canyon will take your breath away!
We finally hit the slopes with Miles! A 1.3 mile hike on the Angels Overlook Trail took us to the Garden of Gratitude and a spectacular view of the canyon below.
There are many routes to choose from, so pick up a route map at the welcome centre. Plus, if you’re not traveling with your pet, check in with one of the resident dogs at Best Friends!
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, 22 miles west of Kanab, preserves 1,200 acres of sand dunes! Created by the wind that flows between the Moquith and Moccasin mountains, it is a unique landscape to see in this part of the country.

Walking on the sand is challenging for both dogs and people, but pets are welcome throughout the park. Also note that most of the dunes are open for OHV use, so watch out for vehicles when exploring.
