I haven’t heard that name in a long time. After Indonesia lifted PCR measures for tourists from mid-May, weekend getaways to Bintan are suddenly possible again. Everyone in Singapore will be delighted that Bintan is open to us again – we’ve got the last three places on board.

We wanted a quiet vacation, so we looked for a resort in the Gunung Kizong area on the southeast side of Bintan Island, away from other resorts. Stayed at The Residence Bintan, a restaurant that just opened in 2018, which was forced to close again due to the impact of COVID.

Residence Bintan offers a variety of room types – from 1-bedroom villas to 2-bedroom villas to 1-bedroom suites. The beach villa has a private pool and is so beautiful!

I played around with the sites above to see which would give me the best price. Finally we booked a room from the garden terrace on booking.com.

However, when we checked in, we were given a nice ocean view suite. We agreed with him, in fact, we like high quality, so it was good for us!

As mentioned in my Bintan Travel Guide, I took a ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Bandar Bintan Telani (BBT for short). Residence Bintan from BBT offers free transportation in the form of a bus, which is a big help! After booking, you need to contact them and give them the ship time.

So my friend learned – you don’t have to go through immigration because you have to wait for other guests anyway. After all the guests arrived, it was an easy and uneventful one hour drive to the resort.

As mentioned earlier, although we had booked a garden terrace suite, we were given a nice sea view suite. All rooms can be accessed using a key card provided by entering the Wi-Fi password.

The suite comes with a large balcony with a dining area overlooking the sea, a table with four seats (so you can enjoy your room service at the right table!), a sofa and a large bedroom.

The suite comes with all the amenities you need – bathrobes, hair dryer, soap and shampoo, towels, bathtub, coffee machine, dining chairs and a desk where you can work if you want (why not?). We only got one of the two nights we stayed there, but there is a turndown service.

Two bikes are provided per room to get around the shared resort, but I think if you have more people they will give you more bikes too. I wanted to use the bike but my child didn’t have a seat.

So we went around the resort. I found it convenient because it is no more than 10 minutes walk to the restaurant and the room is a minute walk from the beach. If you don’t want to walk or bike and it’s raining, you can call a taxi if there are many umbrellas around the resort.

There is good fast Wi-Fi coverage around the resort, but I don’t think I would be able to do any heavy work with it that requires a fast internet connection. If you go to the part of the beach that is not near the pool, the connection may be wrong.

To be honest, I was very happy at The Residence Bintan. However, there are two small problems with our room:

Since we visited Bintan after Indonesia effectively lifted the COVID restrictions, I think most of the staff are still new to their jobs. But if it is true, I don’t know how to say. Everyone seemed to be successful and welcoming.

During our stay, we noticed that all the employees are always smiling, even when they are busy carrying carts or bringing food. I love the staff at Residence Bintan!

However, we have noticed some bugs in the service. For example – even if they deliver drinks to the beach bar, the used cups are not cleaned for a while. In the afternoon we noticed that our cups had not been picked up the next morning.

We noticed that the service improved on Sunday evenings when there were fewer guests. We went back to our room, got some sweets and came with the service. This was not done on the first Saturday night.

Anyway, I added it to New Discoveries. It’s all a minor distraction at best. I can imagine that there are many things that need to be corrected, so I took a more gentle approach.

Due to the remote location of the resort, you will depend on the resort for food. The resort has three restaurants, but the pool and kitchen share the same menu, so there are only two options at the resort.

Although I find their food to be decent, the quality varies. For example, we ordered pomelo salad on Saturday and Sunday and it turned out that it tasted better on Sunday.

I also found the food prices…expensive. The price of food, including alcohol and drinks, is similar to the best restaurants in Singapore.

Finally, I underestimated that they charge Rp 25,000 (SG$2.30) for water in restaurants and swimming pools. They call it “still water on the house”, but I’m pretty sure it’s the filtered water they provide in the room for free. My advice is to bring snacks and several bottles, so you have options when you’re hungry but don’t want to spend $15 on lunch.
