Dexter’s 2019 dog epic journey has officially begun! January and February were full of local dog day trips, but Cambridge, Ohio was our first pet weekend trip. Traveling with dogs is always more fun with friends, so I invited Levi’s BFF Dexter and his mom Chris to join us.
Dog Friendly Vacations In The Midwest
Cambridge, Ohio is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Ohio in Guernsey County. With a population of around 13,000, this small town would be the perfect place to discover dogs.
Dog Friendly Provincetown, Ma
Our first stop was lunch at McKenna Market in central Cambridge. This dog friendly restaurant offered outside seating and when the sun shone we stayed warm and dry even in March! This family market is owned by the McKenna family, who have been in the deli and market business since the 70’s. The family restored the century-old historic building, which soon became a destination for foodies. McKenna’s Market is known for its delicious homemade foods and salads, we knew we were in for a great experience.
The menu was extensive and offered a variety of dishes to please everyone’s palate. Chris ordered the shrimp basket and I went with the Fiesta chicken salad. They welcomed us with hot coffee and fresh water and dog treats for us and the dogs.
While we were drinking our coffee, people came up to us, calling and petting the dogs. They were a huge success and everyone was very friendly and sociable. McKenna’s front door had people coming in and out through lunch; they have a busy job. I soon learned why when our food arrived. The food was amazing!
When I travel, I really try to order meals that aren’t regular fare, and I’m usually very satisfied. The party salad was the bomb! It was so fresh, colorful and full of flavour. My taste buds and stomach were very happy. Chris’s shrimp and chips looked hot and inviting. He said they were cooked to perfection.
Pet Friendly Travel In Northern Indiana
After lunch I looked into McKenna’s Market. It included bulk snacks, fruit, candy, gourmet cheese, meats, artisan and local foods, fresh coffee beans, vintage soda pop, wines and more. I ordered some of his famous deputies to lunch, with a bag of fresh coffee.
We thought it would be fun to walk around the city and look for fun and quirky sculptures, murals and local landmarks. We were not disappointed. Cambridge was the home of former astronaut and US senator John Glenn. Although we didn’t visit the John & Annie Glenn Museum with the dogs, we did find an Ohio historical marker.
Another local celebrity was William Boyd. William Boyd was best known as Hopalong Cassidy, a cowboy star who appeared on the big screen in the 1930s and 40s and on television in the 1950s Cambridge has the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, a collection of memorabilia displayed in various locations throughout Historic Cambridge. It was fun to find some demos.
Our tummies were craving something sweet, so we went to Kennedy’s Bakery. Kennedy’s Bakery has been serving Cambridge since 1925. Family members have been baking bread for over 80 years. This scratch sounded like the perfect place to get baked goods.

On entering, I was greeted by a warm smile and the sweet smell of fresh produce. There were so many delicious items to choose from! I was surrounded by fresh bread, rolls, cakes, cookies, brownies, doughnuts, pastries, sweets and more.
One of the owners, Patty, gave me a behind the scenes tour. I was shocked by how big the bread was. They had old ovens and equipment that they had been using since the beginning of the store. I really enjoyed all the love and dedication the family have towards the bakery and their community. It was a pretty cool experience.
Before leaving, I ordered a rich chocolate brownie, a fresh donut and the best selling tea biscuits. When I sunk my teeth into the decadent muffin, it became clear that this muffin was made with love and fresh ingredients. The tea biscuits were so sweet I almost didn’t want to eat them. But I’m glad I did; they were moist, with just the right amount of sweetness.
It was time for us to call it a day and head to our dog cabin at the Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center (click to read more about the cabin). After feeding the dogs, Chris and I were ready to dive into our subs from McKenna’s Market. I ordered Roscoe’s Village Chicken Salad and Chris ordered McKenna’s Favorite. Mckenna’s favorite was loaded with capicola, salami, pepperoni and an Italian 4-cheese blend. My salad was lovely. The chicken salad sandwich had big chunks of chicken with a nice dressing that you wouldn’t think of when ordering. It was unique and very tasty.

After a full day exploring Cambridge, Ohio, it was time to hit the hay and rest for the adventure ahead. Saturday would be a full day of walking and hiking in Salt Fork, Ohio’s largest state park. But sleep first!

Chicago is known for improvisation and the “Yes and” rule. But the Indiana Dunes, “Yes, SAND!” That’s where you say. Just 35 miles from the city, it’s a perfect dog-friendly day trip from Chicago. You and your dune dog will love exploring the parks, lakes and beaches.

Dog Friendly Vacations: Top 12 Cities In The Us
Don’t follow the falls. Stick to the Rovers and the licking they’re used to. I kid you not – chase the waterfalls (after a heavy rain) at this amazing (and free) State Park! Less than 100 miles from Chicago, Starved Rock boasts 18 canyons, beautiful sandstone lakes, fun local wineries and brewpubs with dog-friendly patios, and a rich cultural history. Autumn is the best paws, the best scenario to hit the high tail trails.
From local shops to beautiful parks and trails, Amish country in northern Indiana has plenty to do for pets. Try Shipshewana Trading Place, where you can experience the largest flea market in the Midwest. Just a word of warning: after a weekend of learning about the Amish way of life, it can be hard to get back into the city.
Wisconsin is the perfect place to take lots of “cheesy” vacation photos with your dog! Most restaurants allow dogs on their patios, and many lovely bed and breakfasts welcome them too. This resort town loves puppies as much as humans, so you can both relax and unwind together. If you’re feeling less R&R and more outdoors, take a stroll to Big Foot Beach State Park near Lake Geneva.
There’s a pupper here for beer, and there’s nowhere better than Milwaukee. Exceptionally for pets, you may have a difficult time convincing Fido to come back to Chicago with you. Stay a while at one of their many pet-friendly hotels, but the Kimpton Journeyman boutique has great river views, no extra pet fees, and a ring to keep you comfortable.
