As a former textile designer, I’m lucky enough to know a little more about what it’s like to make a bed, so I can confidently share how we make beautiful textiles with pets. Here are my top tips + tips for dog-friendly bedding:

I mention this first because I’m pretty sure we’ve all told our pets that “we can’t have nice things because of this”. I even have a pillow to say it! But I mention adoption first because I believe there will always be some level of fabric destruction when you live with a pet. Pets get dumped, dogs have accidents, cats squeeze the living lights out of things…it just happens. Of course you can minimize the damage, but for the sake of your sanity, I suggest you accept the fact that things are going to get worse.

I didn’t want this post to be a list of the best bedding brands or products for pet owners. Instead, I want to give you information on what to look for so you can be a smart consumer and make your own decision! To get you started, here’s a quick guide to popular bed types and my thoughts on how they fit with pets:

If you want linen bedding, buy pure linen instead of blends. Flax is the fiber that makes up linen threads and makes them extremely strong… three times stronger than cotton or wool! I also recommend linen as it gets better with age and more washings. Some sources I read while researching for this post say that linen can last up to 12 times longer than cotton.

I personally like percale sheets because they are small and comfortable to the touch and perfect for pet owners. Always choose a tightly woven cotton blanket. I recommend this because animal hair and nails are more likely to be embedded in soft and hard knit fabrics. Percale is generally a stiffer knit than satin, so go for it if that’s what you’re after.

Literally the worst pet around! I’m kidding, it looks… but plush acts like a pet hair magnet. There’s a reason bristle brushes are made of velvet! I have friends who love plush because they can easily wash out pet hair.

If you are concerned about pet hair, you may want to consider good hair removal fabrics, such as silk or satin. I don’t like folding beds like that because it’s just not my vibe, to each their own! Silk and satin come with their own drawbacks due to the value of the fabric and long maintenance.

I can’t tell you how many times George looked at my bed. It’s embarrassing to admit, but that’s what he did when he did it.

Clean And Cozy: Pet Friendly Bedding Options That Combat Hair And Odor

. My memory foam mattress collapsed a few years ago and I’ve been using a waterproof mattress topper ever since. I know it’s absorbent and affects the donkey’s ability to breathe, but at the end of the day I don’t want to see a cat in my bed.

I absolutely love wearing a single breasted vest. I think it’s like sleeping under a cloud. But with our pets, it proved a non-starter. I’m tired of taking my cleaner to dry cleaning and paying so much if someone gets sick (

) upper part. After another cat pee incident that ruined our routine, I vowed that only the replacement sheets would go forward because they are machine washable. I made the switch about 5 years ago and it worked really well. This is one of my top tips when it comes to pet friendly bedding!

My biggest tip is to only choose machine washable bedding. Decorative pillows are not included. If you have a home, check the charging capacity of your appliances. If you rent, I recommend going to a laundromat on a regular basis to do a lot of textile cleaning in large machines. Depending on how many beds you have, visiting a laundromat may be the most efficient, as you can access multiple machines at the same time. Don’t be afraid to air dry your textiles, even if it takes a long time. Don’t forget: dryer heat can shorten the life of your textiles!

Summer Bedding: Find The Best Bedding For The Warmer Months

Proper care of your mattresses and textiles is the best way to get the most out of your investment. Since our two dogs sleep in bed with us, I sweep my bed (

) once a week and wash everything except bedding. Sheets, pillowcases, pillows, duvet covers… all are washable. While washing things, I take the time to re-wash the pillows and put down the comforter. I wash dishes every quarter. Always read the care instructions for your clothes and bedding!

Some people have mentioned that after re-doing the mattress, they put a layer on top of the protective layer, especially for pet hair. You can totally go that route, but I can’t. Instead, I always use machine washable fabrics like linen and cotton.

Between washes, I freshen up my sheets with pillow spray to keep everything smelling fresh. I’m also a very light sleeper and often have night sweats, that helps too!

Bedding Fabric Guide: Which Bedding Material Is Best For You?

I recently posted a few polls on my stories asking who locks their front doors and lets people in with their pets. I was amazed how many of my followers left their pets alone in the same room! We keep our doors closed to help heat efficiency, but now I don’t trust my pets, especially the cat. Now George is only allowed in the bedroom under supervision.

I found that this one change made a huge difference in the feel and durability of our textiles. But it’s clear: limit access and your pets won’t be able to harm your bed.

A lot of people have asked me this! Make sure your cat always has a suitable litter box and encourage it to use it. Keep the dog’s nails trimmed and trimmed. We use this trimming tool to round each nail so that they are not sharp and less likely to fall into the wires.

Also, pay attention to fabrics that can be stretched more easily before buying. If the shell, the three-dimensional structure, of an object is supposed to be stretched or light, it may not be as durable. This type of texture is basically begging to get your pet’s nails dirty! So shopping.
