It doesn’t take me three months to blog about a dog-friendly trip to Route 66, but sometimes I can’t or want to get started because the summer is too hot to walk your dog in Oklahoma and Texas.

September is actually the perfect time to read this post and start making dog-friendly fall plans. Just plan

My first 66 dog road trips with Henry were more adventurous. By “experiences,” I mean missed turns, storm warnings, and awkward stops. I’m looking at Uranus. Because I didn’t have the benefit of an EZ manual or experience.

If you are in the planning stages of your 66 trip, step 1 is to get this book. It won’t tell you where the dog-friendly stops are, I do, but the directions will keep you hidden and maybe save your sanity.

After you get your book, turn to Oklahoma on page 16. It says: “…Visit McGerry’s Route 66 Gallery by Jerry McClanahan, creator of the Art/EZ Guide.” Do this. The phone number is there. Call and schedule a visit. The book is a travel guide but contains stories written by the author Mr. Jerry. He will also write your book.

Last time we completed the dog-friendly Route 66, we went to Blue Whale Catoos, OK. The gift shop was open so we bought passports and an official Oklahoma US 66 stamp.

Puff The Magic Cabin

It’s a passport, but it’s fun to get. I didn’t get a passport in Missouri, so my first itinerary is in a leather-bound travel journal. This is from the dog-friendly Boots Court Motel in Carthage, MO. It remains one of my favorite experiences on the road so far.

Mr Jerry said Boots was under new management since our visit in 2019 and they were a bit disappointed. I think change is part of the way, but there is no substitute for accepting Debbie Dee.

Here’s my other tip for your 66th road trip: find a hair-free travel buddy. It helps a lot to read a book while someone else is driving. That means you don’t have to navigate too far from Katoosa to Tulsa. We reached our hotel within two hours.

The dog-friendly Campbell Inn is housed in a restored 1927 building. Here, original wood floors and vintage furniture found throughout the building before the renovation adorn the walls of the lobby. Walking during the week made finding the Route 66 theme easy. The bathroom is beautifully decorated with street art including vintage metal signs. A queen-size bed, large walk-in closet, and dual-head shower make this room comfortable.

Broken Bow Pet Friendly Cabins

The lower porch and lounge are pet-friendly, and the east side of the park has a bowling green. Pet deposit is $25 per night.

You’ll start your neon fix with the Campbell Hotel sign on 11th Street and mark the hotel’s street entrance. About a mile down the road (I suggest you drive), you’ll find more neon at Buck Atom’s Space Curios. Visit the dog-friendly gift shop at the 1950s PEMCO gas station to pick up your Route 66 memorabilia and a new water bottle for your pup for the day. Come back after dark to witness the lights cast by the 21-foot space cowboy.
