Because of their important natural and cultural features, the parks are regulated by the Provincial Parks and Nature Reserves Act. But because they are an important resource for human recreation, parks make restrictions when it comes to pets. As a general rule, pets should be kept on a leash no longer than 2 meters (about 6.5 feet), even in places where pets are allowed, such as swimming pools or beaches.
Pets are allowed in all Ontario Provincial Parks, with a few exceptions listed below. That said, some cities are better suited for fun vacations with pets than others. To help you choose the perfect destination for you as a dog owner, here’s an overview of nearly two dozen parks in Ontario that offer exercise and beaches for dogs:
If you’re looking for fun summer interpretive programs, skiing or canoeing in Georgian Bay, you’ll find it at Avenda Provincial Park. The destination also includes an area designated as a pet-friendly beach along the coast of Georgian Bay, where dogs can play on a leash.
Sault Ste Marie, Ontario Campground
Located about an hour and a half north of Napanee, this provincial park is famous for the 100-foot-tall Mazinaw Rock, which juts out of Mazinaw Lake and displays more than 260 indigenous pictographs. Travelers can take interpretive boat trips around the lake and cliffs. The park has a 2.4-mile dog training trail and a pet-friendly beach located on lower Mazinaw Lake.
Lake Charleston not only offers hiking trails, including the highest viewpoint in the county, but is also a popular destination for wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and swimming. The park is located above a rocky lake and includes a forest landscape that is the southern extension of the Canadian Shield. The park includes a dedicated pet beach located near Shady Ridge Beach.
Cherry Beach in Toronto’s Clark Beach Park is located at the foot of Cherry Street on the north shore of the Outer Harbour. The park has seven bike lanes, two picnic areas and a designated dog area on the west side of the beach.
Located on Lake Ontario, Fifty Point is an 80-acre park perfect for swimming, bird watching, boating, picnicking and fishing. Guests can enjoy the view of the lake from the promenade or the shaded areas. Fifty Point has a dog beach where pets can swim. But when they are out of the water, they must be on a leash.
Wawa Rv Resort & Campground
The provincial park between Timmins and Chaploo has hiking trails through ancient glacial landscapes and a soft sandy beach. The shallow water and the nearby playground are particularly interesting for families with children. The park has an animal beach for swimming and exercise near the fish cleaning hut.
Kettle Lakes Provincial Park has many attractions: blueberry picking in the boreal Jack Pine forest in late summer; 22 boilers with spring water created by glaciers; translation programs for families; and 14 miles of fun bike trails. Four-legged visitors can enjoy a special animal exercise area near the Green Lake, where dogs can swim in the lake.
If you are looking for a park in Ontario with a dog park, this is one of the places to go. Killbear Park has a dog beach near the group camping area where your pet can roam and play. The area is also famous for its 6 km leisure and cycling path, sailing and windsurfing facilities and the combination of rocky coast and sandy beaches.
Located on the northwest shore of Lake Erie, Long Point is the fourth oldest provincial park in Ontario and one of the most important bird and waterfowl migration and resting areas in North America. There is a dog beach in the park and a gym in the New Park section. When your dog is in other parts of the park, it must be on a lead.
Pet Friendly Ontario
Located on the shores of Eagle Lake, this park is a great gathering place for friends and families, including four-legged friends. MikiĊĦev has three shallow sandy beaches and places to play volleyball, basketball, disc golf and horseshoes. Adjacent to the day use area, you will find a pet training area that includes an agility class and a swimming area.
Located on the banks of the Boyne River, this park is close to Parry Sound and Georgian Bay and offers spectacular views of Lake Oastler from the riverside campsites. You can enjoy canoeing and fishing for pike, bass and trout. The park also has a grass gym with a sandy beach where dogs can swim.
