One of my childhood memories is visiting the historic town of Akoka on the mighty Murray River and riding a steamboat. I was finally able to return in 2021, between the lockdowns, and of course I brought my dog with me.
Most steamships in Achuca will allow well-behaved dogs on board, unless they are also a floating restaurant. For example, Echuca Paddlesteamers run several hour-long sailings a day on the historic ships PS Pevensey and PS Alexander Arbuthnot and welcome pets on board. Just be sure to keep your pup close when the whistle sounds!
Victoria is blessed with many charming historic towns and cities, one of the best examples being Beechworth, 3 hours north of Melbourne. Beechworth is home to what is considered the finest set of provincial public buildings in all of Victoria, built from the beautiful local honey granite.
To get the most out of Beechworth with your dog, I recommend picking up a self-guided tour booklet from the Visitor Information Center for a small fee. Then a tour through the main streets of the city.

Beechworth is also worth following the Gorge Scenic Drive through Beechworth Heritage Park on the north side of the town. It can be driven, or you can walk with all or part of the dog. Make sure you keep them on the leash.
Most ski resorts in Australia do not allow dogs, either because of their location in a national park or other restrictions. But the Victorian Highlands Dinner Plain is an exception, which means your dog can join you on snow adventures during the winter months. This ski area offers gentle slopes perfect for beginners, whether enjoying sledding or general fun.
Note that the village is surrounded by a national park and is not fenced, so you must keep your dog on a lead most of the time. There are several off-leash areas as detailed on the website. Also check the Dinner Plains website for links to dog friendly accommodation in the village.
While Melbourne has many trams on the city streets, did you know there is an old talking tram in Bendigo? It’s a great way to explore this historic city, especially since well-behaved dogs can join you on the tram.

With commentary accompanying you along the way, you choose to catch the tram around town (which takes around 45 minutes) or hop on and off as you like with all-day tickets.
Along the way, you’ll pass Deborah’s central gold mine (where self-guided dogs are allowed), the historic courthouse and soldiers’ monument, and Lake Verona (a great place to walk the pup).
Bright is an increasingly popular destination, even among dog owners. This small town in the high country has many dog-friendly walking trails. But for something different, consider a bike ride with your dog.
There are plenty of cycle paths near Bright, including the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail which starts nearby. And if you don’t have your own bike, there are several bike rentals in the city. At least one of them, Electric Bikes, also offers dog trailers for rent, although other stores may also have them available if you ask directly. Check all weight limits.

A popular option for inexperienced cyclists is the relatively flat cycle path to Wandiligong, which is just 3.5 miles from Bright and home to the Nightingale Brothers Apple Orchard Afterwards, enjoy a dip in the River Evans or a local beer at Bright Brewery .
There are several places to see koalas in the wild in Victoria, but one of the best is Raymond Island, located in East Gippsland not far from the entrance to the lakes.
To get to Raymond Island, I recommend parking in Paynesville and taking the short ferry as a free foot passenger. The koala trail starts right in front of the ferry terminal and is recommended to be done on foot to get a chance to spot all the koalas.
The main course is 1.2 km long, although there are longer versions. chew!
Traveling To Victoria Bc With Dogs
Steamships aren’t the only dog-friendly historic mode of transport in Victoria, and there are some historic dog-friendly rides. Near Melbourne, you can ride an old-fashioned steam train on the Victorian Goldfield Railway, which connects the gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon.

Excursion department includes historic wooden carriages with family compartments with opening windows, great for an authentic experience. For a full day, book a Wednesday train ride or a Sunday morning train ride. The first includes 2 1/2 hours in the historic gold mining town of Maldon, while the second tour includes a 90 minute stopover. (The Sunday afternoon drive only makes a short stop.) For a dog-friendly lunch, head to the Meldon Hotel with its beer garden, or eat at the tables outside one of the cafes.
Castlemaine is a 90-minute drive from Melbourne, or catch the V/Line train for the full train experience (with small dogs allowed in the carriage, see here).

Maldon isn’t the only historic gold mining town in Victoria where your dog can ride a historic train. For another historic dog-friendly trail, head to Walhalla, about 2 1/2 hours east of Melbourne. But the train ride (this time with diesel) is not the only attraction in Valhalla for dogs…
For something completely different, take a tour of the expansive gold mine in a long tunnel. Once one of Victoria’s most productive gold mines, today you can take a 50-minute guided tour of the main tunnel, visit the original gold mines and hear many fascinating stories from your guide.
The tunnel is quite dark and sometimes humid, so I carried my small dog during the tour. Decide in advance if you think your dog will be well behaved and happy to participate in the tour. Due to group size restrictions, we recommend booking in advance.
There is much more to see in Valhalla, including a walking tour of the village and reading some of the more than 30 inscriptions that explain its history. Dogs on a leash are also welcome to join you on the tram line path to the gold mine, which is extended by a long tunnel.
High Country For Dogs, Victoria, Australia
If you’re thinking about driving the Great Ocean Road with your dog, be aware that it’s not exactly dog-friendly. Many of the most famous places along the way, such as the observation deck of the 12 apostles, are not allowed for dogs. Additionally, many beaches restrict dogs during the summer months.
However, there is still plenty to do with your dog and it can be a short or long walk with your pup, especially if you are prepared. I recommend that you read my guide in advance to find out what is dog friendly and what is not and book your accommodation in advance. If possible, visit in the spring months or other cooler months of the year when many more beaches allow dogs on the sand.
