Before you go, think about leash rules and pet etiquette (like throwing away bags). Also note the snowy nesting season from March 15 to September 15, when some beaches do not allow pets to protect these endangered species. A trip to Cannon Beach with the kids and pups because that’s how we travel now and we’ve found a few dog-friendly hotels in Oregon.

We haven’t been to the Oregon Coast in several years. It’s not that we don’t like it, we usually head north to British Columbia to see family, and Seattle to Vancouver is about the same distance as Seattle to Portland or Seattle to Cannon Beach. But this year we’ll be traveling everywhere within a three-hour radius of Seattle, and since that (hopefully for a while) doesn’t currently include British Columbia, we decided to spend a few days in Cannon Beach and Portland. Not only did we need to find things to do in Cannon Beach with the kids, but with our Yorkie Scout, we also needed to find dog-friendly hotels in Oregon.

We had the best trip to the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach a few years ago for my husband’s birthday, where we saw Haystack Rock from our room and also enjoyed a meal at the Wayfarer Restaurant. When I found out that Surfsand was dog friendly, it seemed like the perfect choice for our current travel situation. I had to call for a dog friendly room and ended up getting a very large room with a large bathroom overlooking the ocean and a patio where we could drink coffee and look out over Haystack Rock. The kids were very excited to go to the pool here as the pool is open but not very busy during the allotted times, making it very safe for the kids to swim in the pool for the first time in a year.

Unlike our usual trips, we spent a lot of time in the room or relaxing on the beach. We called in our order and went looking for Seasons Cafe and Pizza A’fetta restaurants. Since our room had a small refrigerator, we grabbed yogurt, pastries, and fruit for breakfast from Costco in Tumwater. This was our only restroom and snack stop between Seattle and Cannon Beach.

We also ordered room service from the Wayfarer Restaurant and had a great dinner. After almost a year of not going to restaurants, it was so nice to have dinner on a real plate in a hotel room, and the food was delicious. (A friend gave us a very nice bottle of wine, so that made the meal even more special.)

While we were there, the Surfland Resort also had cookies in the lobby every day around 3:00 pm. And over the weekend, their activity sheet said they were still having the usual ice cream socials and beer/beer tastings, but with social distancing where you took these things to enjoy in your room or on the beach.

The main reason for the trip to Cannon Beach was Scout’s birthday. We wanted to take him to the beach because he loves to dig and run in the sand and we are so grateful for all the joy he has brought into our lives this past year. I was worried that there might be thunderstorms or rain in the winter, but we had a beautiful sunny day and Scout had a great time. We brought games, movies and books with us, and it was so peaceful relaxing together in a beautiful room, even though we were
