Dog Friendly Vacations Virginia – If you don’t know, I’m from Virginia. I have lived here most of my life with the exception of being born in Florida and going to college in New York. Although I have spent many years here, I feel that I have not seen or done as much as I would like to. I’ve written about my travels and arrivals in the past, but today I’m proud to write about the pet friendly places I want to visit in Virginia.
The park is located at the John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake) on the Roanoke River in southern Virginia. The park includes pet-friendly campsites and cabins, although there may be a small pet fee. The park also has water views and access. Twenty miles of trails pass through this national park, ideal for hiking, biking and horseback riding. We hope to camp in Occoneechee this year!
Dog Friendly Vacations Virginia
This winery is very dog friendly (or at least according to the reviews) and allows dogs inside the tasting room, which I think is very important for a friendly winery. Three Fox Vineyards is only 45 minutes away so we will definitely be visiting soon!
Pet Friendly Cabins In The Blue Ridge Mountains
Not all national parks allow this, but luckily Shenandoah National Park does. While I had visited a few times before, like on a field trip as a kid, I hadn’t been with Luna. This national park offers animal-friendly trails (over 500 km) and camping. There are trails where dogs are not allowed, so check before you go. Shenandoah National Park is only an hour and a half outside of Northern Virginia, so we will be visiting soon!
If you grew up in Northern Virginia, it is imperative that you visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon at least once. I’ve visited my fair share, but now it feels like ages ago! I was surprised to learn that Mt Vernon offers dog walking for guests! Each President’s Pups Walking Tour is a 1.25 mile walk where participants can bring their dogs and learn about George Washington’s love for dogs. Dogs are allowed on the grounds of Mount Vernon, but not inside the historic buildings, museums or shops.
Virginia is home to 544 miles of the Appalachian Trail and while I’ve hiked some of it, I certainly haven’t conquered it all. All sections of the trail in Virginia allow dogs, but there are three sections that do not (Ackman, New York and North Carolina). Many sections of the trail also require dogs to be on a leash. I hope to see most, if not all, of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia in the coming years.
This little town needs to be on my list so much because it’s my last name. I don’t know if it’s pet friendly, but I feel like it’s a place I have to visit before I die, even if their 2010 census was only 507!

If you’re craving Mexico, this is the place to go with your dog. Their downtown Canal Walk location is dog-friendly on the “dog court.” Then you can walk along the canal!

This outdoor mall has a dog park and water bowls outside many stores. This is a great place to relax with your pets and let them play in the small dog park. Each store has its own pet policy. So check each store before entering.
As the name suggests, this is Richmond’s largest farmers market! Located in Bryan Park in the north of the city, it takes place every Saturday from 8am to 12pm. They are dog friendly. The park is also beautiful. So after shopping you can walk in the park with your dog.
My dog Hannah loves walking down Carey Street. What she loves most about Carytown is going to all the shops! (I call her a little diva. She loves shopping). I found that many shops in Kerrytown are happy to see it and welcome us to browse. Hannah’s nose led me to many beautiful shops here.

Our Bernedoodle Sally has been to more countries than most of our friends. 25? To be precise! And if there’s one thing we’ve learned about dog-friendly travel, it’s that most destinations are dog-friendly.
It’s “dog-approved,” but that’s not always the case. Most people have limited options when it comes to dog friendly hotels, food, activities, etc… but not in Greater Williamsburg, Virginia! We’re going to come right out and say that Williamsburg is just as much fun for dogs as it is for people (if Sally could talk, she’d agree)!

You cannot enter the buildings and museums, but you are allowed to walk around Colonial Williamsburg with your dog.
Although we didn’t go to Busch Gardens on this trip, we did find out that they have a dog daycare – we might as well! We will definitely take advantage next time we are in Sally’s town!
Although your child may not understand the significance of this, we still think it’s great that they get to visit the first place where English lives in America! Pets are not allowed on the premises, but lead animals are allowed anywhere on the premises!
