One thing many first-time visitors don’t realize is that Sonoma isn’t just a city or a region; It is an entire county, covering more than 1,700 square kilometers and consisting of 9 official cities and other designated areas.
It runs along the Pacific Coast through redwood forests and canyons, east to Napa County. Its most famous attraction, the world-famous Sonoma Wine Country, is made up of several regions, nearly 60,000 acres of vineyards and more than 400 wineries.

We opted for a quick glimpse of the interior rather than finding the treasure alone with the pup. You can grab a bottle and take it outside to the covered wine cellar or covered patio if you prefer to drink outdoors.

The tasting at Dutcher Crossing offers an excellent selection of red and white wines. I also prefer white or pink, but I always find the reds here really delicious. This is the victory!
Outside, there’s a nice grassy area for the dogs to play and explore (although they have to be on a leash…much to Cooper’s chagrin!). They came into the rehearsal room and we were happy to see him.
In retrospect, I almost wish I had saved Dutcher Crossing for a later date. It’s the perfect place for lunch!
From Dutcher Crossing we headed south a few miles to our next destination: Wilson Winery. The atmosphere here couldn’t be more different; While Dutcher is intimate and simple, Wilson welcomed us with a spacious wooden bar and lively atmosphere.

The deck is raised above the vines and surrounded by large shade trees to keep seating nice and comfortable. Although there was plenty of seating, only one patio table was available when we arrived and we’re glad we did.
Unlike Dutcher Crossing, Wilson focuses heavily on reds; in fact, their slate is 100% Zinfandel. This time we decided to forgo the tasting and buy a bottle to share at the table.
Cooper has many friends here; Not only were there other dogs going to the vineyard with the family, but there were also free range dogs to say hello to (I believe they belonged to the owners of the winery).
And it’s safe to say that people love it: one woman asked if she could pick it up and bring it to her desk to show to her friends!

One thing that sets Wilson apart from the pack? A gigantic 26 foot steel coyote, exhibited for the first time at Burning Man. Of course I had to prepare Cooper for a little photo shoot in front of him.
The third vineyard of the day was one of our favorites… In fact, it was the only vineyard we joined the wine club.
That decision was partly inspired by the delicious wines we tasted (I chose sparkling wine, mmm) and the incredible hospitality we experienced. David, who led our tasting, could not have been more knowledgeable, welcoming and kind.
Neither Derek nor I are wine lovers, but David made it easy to pick up on the subtleties of the wines we were tasting.

Amistan was allowed to run outside, the staff let him go so Cooper could play with David’s German Shepherd Bruno.
There were other dogs running loose, which led to a puppy mill around the property. Cooper may be different from the rest of the crew, but he’s having the time of his life.
Our last vineyard of the day is Christopher Creek, a beautiful winery known not only for its award-winning wines, but also for its breathtaking scenery.

Christopher Creek’s tasting room is cozy and rustic, but the real showstopper is the outdoor patio. Nestled among the vineyards, it is the perfect place to sunbathe with a sunset and a glass of wine.
Christopher Creek is not a place I would have thought at first glance was dog friendly, but we were happy that Cooper was able to get into the rehearsal room with the outdoor fence.
Even though we weren’t watching the sunset, we could see the golden glow cast over the rolling landscape. With fairy lights twinkling overhead and red wine warming us as the temperature dropped, the atmosphere was as warm as romance. but also our furry friends!
