Dog Friendly Vacations Southeast

Dog Friendly Vacations Southeast – We’ve done this almost every year since Emmett was young with us. We’re packing our bags and heading to a cabin in the woods for a long weekend of hiking, naps, snacks, and more – pet-free!

It’s so fun to plan a trip with your dog because… well… let’s talk about vacations first.

Dog Friendly Vacations Southeast

We ALL need to get away from time to time. Even the most KonMarried of us experience stress, and vacations provide an opportunity to relax and recharge. Dogs? Well, they don’t have the same daily load. (Thank goodness, right? It’s one of the things that makes dogs so adorable!) But many dogs get bored. And while your dog is never bored, he loves you and loves the opportunity to socialize and play!

Dog Friendly Destinations

A word of caution: This is about planning your vacation with YOUR dog. In 2006, we could take Em anywhere and he loved nothing more than sitting on his pet-friendly patio getting attention and food. He could visit a winery just as easily as hiking and be just as happy. If your dog is like that, GREAT! You can do almost anything during your pup’s vacation!

Cooper, however… Coop is not one bit like that. Public places cause stress. Every time he took him to the outdoor cafe to exercise, he would get so anxious that he wouldn’t eat, even if he asked for his own plate of something delicious like scrambled eggs! This type of vacation simply will not be a fun, enriching, bonding experience. However, he loves to exercise. He likes run. He likes hiking. He loves to exercise and we haven’t been able to do that since Violet arrived. So we decided to let Coop out this year and take him on some longer, more challenging hikes than he has done in years.

So we found a pet-friendly rental near a park we wanted to visit and got to work!

If this idea intrigues you and you might want to take your dog on vacation, here are some things that have worked (and haven’t worked) to help you get started.

From campsites to holiday apartments and beach houses, these are some of my favorite Great Danes places to stay in South East Queensland. Living in Brisbane during COVID-19 restrictions and border closures has given us the opportunity to travel more locally. And local travel meant our Great Dane Pickle was always included in our travel plans. ABOUT ME

My name is Sasha, Great Dane mom and owner of Arctic Mist. A few years ago, she wouldn’t have lived more than a few months without an international vacation. But times have changed and in recent years we have taken many local trips with our Great Dane Pickle, particularly in South East Queensland. Sadly, Pickle passed away last year. But we recently welcomed a Great Dane puppy, Pumpkin, into our family. She follows in Pickle’s footsteps and will join us on many adventures.

So I thought I’d share some of my favorite places to stay with dogs in South East QLD, including links to places of interest and accommodation.

But before we continue, if you have never traveled with your dog and don’t know where to start, check out my blog at

There are many dog-friendly campsites in Australia and Hip Camp is a good place to start. You can enter the number of animals in the search query and the results will only show the options for animals.

One of my favorite places to camp with dogs is Gordon Country in the Humburra Valley. It is located above Cunninghams Gap, between Aratula and Warwick, just over 2 hours from Brisbane. We have camped there countless times and started going there years ago (long before Pickle) when it was just a cattle farm with no facilities. This has changed a lot over the years and they now have amenities, glamping sites and lodges.

Although the grounds and campground are dog-friendly, they are not allowed in the cabins (fenced yard and porch only). We have never stayed in cabins for this reason. If you go outside of public or school holidays, you’ll have a better chance of finding a spot by the stream. However, you will need a 4×4 to enjoy the best campsites. Access to Gordon Country is via a dirt road and some areas near the entrance and office are accessible without 4×4 vehicles.

Dogs can be kept off leash which is great. But be careful, as cattle and donkeys roam freely in the area. We love going there to relax by the fire, but there are plenty of 4×4 trails and hikes. If you don’t mind the cold, you can swim in the stream, and if you go in winter, bring all your warmest clothes, it’s very cold!

There are many different campsites on North Stradbroke Island. The rules regarding dogs seem to change all the time, so it’s best to check the Stradbroke Island website for up-to-date information on dog-friendly campsites and beaches. Stradbroke Island is a 45-minute ferry ride from Cleveland. Stradbroke Island has public transport, but if you go with a dog I recommend taking the car on the ferry. Please note that dogs must be muzzled to exit the vehicle on the ferry. Stradbroke Island also has dog-friendly holiday homes; See details below.

If you are looking for a holiday home or apartment, Holidays with Dogs is a great website for finding dog-friendly accommodation. Each property indicates whether it is fenced, whether dogs are allowed inside, and whether items such as dog beds, bowls, and poop bags are provided.

Car Travel With Dogs: Does Your Dog Deserve A Road Trip?

Make sure you read the terms and conditions as some places only allow outside dogs or dogs of a certain size.

. If conditions are unclear, please contact the accommodation provider before booking. It is better to be clear in advance than to have problems in the middle of your vacation!

Also make sure the layout of the property is appropriate, i.e. whether your dog is comfortable with stairs or the elevator, whether there is a fenced yard or a place where your dog can relieve itself. If you are not sure, please feel free to contact us and ask.

We stayed in a lovely 2 bed, 1 bath apartment (Perfect Alex Beach Pad) in Alexandra Headland, just north of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. It is located on the second floor, you can go up the stairs to the apartment. However, there is a huge terrace with a nice view, so it doesn’t feel like an apartment. Dogs are allowed inside, but not on the furniture or in the shared pool.

Headland and Mooloolaba are a short drive away. Along Mooloolaba Esplanade there are many dog-friendly restaurants and sunset markets every 1.

Mooloolaba beach is not suitable for dogs. However, Alexandra Headland Beach is dog-friendly and there are several other dog-friendly beaches within a short drive.

Noosa Avalon Cottages is located on 30 acres of land 5 minutes from Pomona and approximately a 30 minute drive from Noosa. There are 5 detached homes on the property, ranging from 1-bedroom cottages to 3-bedroom mansions. They are all dog friendly and allow dogs to enter. We stayed at Kangaroo Lodge which has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The cabin is super cute, it has a large room with a wonderful view and a huge spa. The beds are small (double), but I would still recommend it for a nice quiet weekend.

Some shelters have secure terraces for your dog. The kangaroo house has a fenced yard, but the fence is meant to keep out cows, not dogs. However, it was good for our Great Dane. The property is lovely to walk around, with native gardens and lots of wildlife and birds, as well as free-range livestock, so you may need to keep your dogs on a lead.
